Why Homework Should Be Banned

Many people have many opinions about homework. Some support the idea, while others go against it. I’m here to say they are all wrong. I strongly and personally believe that homework should be banned in schools across Australia.

Firstly, homework gets children exhausted since they already are tired from school. This means that when students do the homework, they usually do worse than in school and the whole point of it is to help you. According to a study done in 2019, 73% of students do worse at home than in schools. And since schools make approximately 60% of exams based on homework, students will get and have gotten worse grades. A school in Australia called Frenrow Public School does not give their students homework and in end of year exams, it is shown that the school is averaging at about 80 - 95%, 25% higher than the national average.

Secondly, children have precious youth that is currently being wasted doing homework and that needs change. You know how your parents or caretakers tell you that you only have one youth and to make the best use of it? That’s because they are right. 84% of people aged between 12 and 25 say that they have practically no time to enjoy themselves because of jobs, heavy tuition etc. A survey showed that people aged between 16 - 25 regret how much time they spent studying for exams and how little time they spent enjoying themselves. This is why homework should be banned, because it takes away from our one and only youth that we will never see again.

Additionally, homework makes you increasingly stressed, causing higher blood pressure and worse mental health. Over the century of its existence, it has turned stress-free students increasingly stressed. In fact, homework has caused so much stress that it can also chip away at your mental health. Since you are given an incredibly short deadline, like a week or the next day, you become more and more stressed. When homework was invented it was designed to be a punishment for naughty children. This is why homework should be banned.

So now that you have a glimpse of the regret and stress homework has caused as well as how it is stealing our youth, draining our energy, drilling away at our mental health, increasing blood pressure, we can stop this never-ending crisis caused by those silent but deadly pieces of paper, waiting to pounce on you.
